Introduction
Based on the book, The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, we have encountered so many characters. Some are even mentioned so little, they become a mystery. One thing we have learned is perspective, how would your character react to events in the book? Since this book is in one perspective we had to use creativity to make it into a recording or like a podcast. In our groups, we researched and wrote a script connecting it all with events that happened in Juniors life.

Her Beloved Grandchildren...
Junior ↑
← Mary |
In creating this character sheet for the wonderful Grandmother Spirit, I had to get to know her. In the process of rereading the parts were she appears. Knowing that she is wise and experienced in every appearance. To Junior, she is a role model to those around her. She may be mentioned a lot in the book by Junior, but she never really is detailed in the book. Using our resources by quoting sentences in the book helped us with our actual podcast and creating the script.
The Script

The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian
|
Using all of our knowledge about Grandmother Spirit, we tried to come up up with imaginary events that didn't happen in the book though still connects to the events described in the book. Our goal was to answer the mystery of the dear Grandmother. What did she personally think about Juniors situations? Or what was she doing before she died? After writing the script, we split roles and edited the Podcast. What I helped the most with in this project was writing the ideas and script for Mary's appearance.
When we first brainstormed, we thought we would be able to have a boy as a Junior. Instead, we changed the script as short as possible, and used my voice as Junior. We realized that Junior can be a girl too. We also changed the idea that Grandmother can make salmon mush while talking to Jr. It didn't really happen because of the lack of time.

Steps and Organization
Did it really help?
Every project WILL I am mean WILL become a disaster if you are not organized mentally. In order to keep us organized and in check we created a "Scrum Board". What is a Scrum Board you may ask..
A board that keeps your group members who missed a day and a teacher who is curious to know where everyone is at that current time. Well...did it help? Yes, though eventually my group forgot all about it. I instead took the lead in telling them what needs to get done. What if I missed a day or two? This would most definitely come in handy. Was there a time when it didn't help? The part when I said our group forgot all about it. The sticky notes would fall and sometimes disappear. Oh, those days when you get more tasks and you have to write it on another note but your hand writing sucks. Then takes you about 6 minutes to write each one. The perfectionist struggles, I try to make them look decent. What if there was a way to have this online? That would be WAY more efficient, let me tell you. |

Overall Podcast: How did we do it?Using average recording devices we recorded based on the script we wrote. The most difficult part was, how were we going to get a silent background in a school full of rowdy high school students. Seems impossible during school hours. It really was. Our group was trying to be as flexible as possible while keeping in mind that there is a due date to this. Casting characters wasn't that hard. One of my group members volunteered to be Grandmother Spirit, then I chose to take the small parts of three separate characters, the rest was up to the last partner to do.
As three people, we all had the same goal. To take this as serious as possible. What happened was we had about four days to complete the recordings. Both of my partners missed a day. Two of us were left to write a script and character analysis. I never missed a day, which made me the leader. I knew the situation. It took about two days to complete the script. Two days to record, luckily I stayed in for lunch or else it wouldn't have been done. I stayed in to add sound effects and edit it. To us, the most important part of the story for Grandmother Spirit is when she dies. We portrayed it by adding the sound effects of her getting ran over by a car and ending up in the hospital. Then, in the hospital bed, she dies. Using effects for WeVideo and other resources available in such little time, I made it work. It was fun writing a story for the Grandmother Spirit herself. |
