How Can We Help?
Victoria & Arthur
Introduction: Victoria
Throughout this project I have learned many things about helping the less fortunate. I have learned the gratitude of life. We are all going to die someday one way or another. There is many possibilities why we never realize people have way less luck than we do and this is completely understandable. Reality says it, open your eyes, you don’t have the worst case scenario. Those people who are selfish and close minded will never know the real joy in life, helping other people. Knowing that you have died good and remembered brings joy to yourself. You will never see that with your own two hands, you can make a small or big change to any that needs it. You will surely live long even if you die today. You don’t want to end up like Scrooge a close minded and ungrateful man. Until one day, three generous ghost managed to open his mind by showing him three major events of life, the past, present, and future. Slowly but surely he listened to the hard truth and stopped being so darn stubborn. He managed to change his ways because he didn’t want to be remembered as the close minded, ungrateful man he was.
““Good Spirit,” he pursued, as down upon the ground he fell before it: “Your nature intercedes for me, and pities me. Assure me that I yet may change those shadows you have shown me, by an altered life!” (A Christmas Carol: in prose, being a Ghost Story of Christmas, page 313)
In this scene, Scrooge, the once close minded and ungrateful man, has seen his untouched grave. He was faced with the future of himself, by future I mean after his death passed by. He seen how the poor and the rich has seen him as a person. Though he is rich, his own class disrespects him. Though not poor, the poor laughs at him. He has seen his dark grave on a Christmas night, he was faced with his own cold body that was forgotten. That is what broke him the most, knowing that because of his choices in life, how exactly did it end up this way? He begged for a new life, a new chance to change his ways. As for the Ghost of Yet to Come has shown him the right way.
In the end, I wanted to help the innocent. I wanted to help the helpless and unblamed. The people that have nothing to do with their fate they have received from birth. Just like Scrooge, who has been pushed in the wrong way. Scrooge was once a child, alone and excluded by children of his age. Hurt by his father, the father that blames the death of Scrooge’s own mother for even existing. I wanted to originally give the innocent medical attention, in a mental way, such as a type of therapy. I knew that there had to be at least one way to help with out going to a hospital that requires students 18 and up. I decided to help the disabled that have intellectual and developmental medical problems.
I personally was rude to these type of people but I was ignorant and a fool. I was young and unable to understand the real pain of my cousin. She has a medical problem she was born with, she had mental retardation. She had none to blame except her birth. I put her down for that, calling her names and being unbearably mean to her. I have always felt bad after I have learned that she is not to blame and this is a serious development problem. Ever since, I have always had a soft spot for people that are struggling from this. The way I am going to help the mentally disabled is by writing to them.
Introduction: Arthur
This project were helping people that are the less fortunate. Something I learned about this project is that everyone deserves a little happiness no matter what their going through. After reading the Christmas Carol, I learned to not be selfish help others and it made me care more about people. I also learned that I don't have to do a whole lot to help someone. I’ve drove around places and seen people just suffering some that are hungry, poor, or even had a disability, or may have a disease. It hurts me just seeing them suffer. I’ve always wanted to help someone I just never had a chance to and I feel so bad about that. In the end, I have figured if you do something nice for someone whoever it may be, you would get a good feeling for helping them.

Eventually we managed to find a place where we can help people like these. We called them and they said they are always looking for any available pen pals of any age. They personally are very flexible with time and they also asked if it is possible if we can go visit the campus at any time. But of course, before we start, we needed to figure out what exactly do the people we are helping need? Are we actually helping them or will we ever solve this problem? The answer is yes and no. According to a website that is focused on getting people all over the world to become a pen pal for a person that is disabled, these people do get lonely because of their medical problem. To also show leadership and give a positive impact in these people's lives that really need a boost in their self esteem. “Dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.” (Ebuddies.org, 2015)
Although, there is no cure to officially to solve this problem since it is a developmental problem from birth. This is the part we can’t help or solve unfortunately. We do wish upon the best for these people but we personally can’t be the superhero for everyone that may have this kind of medical problem. So, with us starting small with one person at a time, we have to know what down syndrome is before we start asking questions. What is their behavior? Why can we solve this medical problem? It states in the article that “There is no single, standard treatment for Down syndrome. Treatments are based on each individual's physical and intellectual needs as well as his or her personal strengths and limitations. People with Down syndrome can receive proper care while living at home and in the community.” (Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, 2014) This quote states that there is no cure, but we can give them proper treatment at communities or at their proper home. It also bases off of what they need as a person in an intellectual way. Depending on their emotional needs and support. That is exactly what we are trying to do even if our cause is starting as a personal connection with one pen pal.

Since our Pen Pal idea works we never know if it can fail. So, we have come up with various plans to help. Our second idea was if the Pen Pal plan backfired was to help adults with reading disabilities. For example, read to them at a local library or at a campus organization. Our third idea was to volunteer at a adult care centre since they have many events weekly. The reason for choosing something that had to do with intellectual or developmental disabilities was because the main idea was to medically help any types of ways, just as long as it was medically involved. Sadly, we had to be 18 or over to help at a hospital so this was acceptable. The way we are going to do this is by email and our minds. We don’t know the exact times and dates because we have not yet met up with our pen pals.
Considerations: Victoria & Arthur
We believe out of all those options, the most feasible was the Pen Pal idea because we wanted to have some kind of connection and understanding with a person that may be struggling. To find out what they personally need and to be there for them whenever they want to talk about their problems. We also believed that the most helpful way to help is to find what they need as a person. You can also do so many things with tight connections. It is truly heartwarming for us for a lonely person to have a person to tell everything to, as I said, it does not matter how big of help you give, it is of how much you have helped this person. Not only is it most helpful, it is most enjoyable for us to see how a relationship grows. It is also very flexible for everybody, with time, date, and meeting. The main consideration we have to intake is how much we can push someone into a relationship. We have to start slow, formal, yet friendly to get the trust of the person we might be talking to. We have to be as respectful as we can and understand the pain or emotion our pen pal may be going through. To understand that to always be as positive as you can and never put them down.

How do we write to a Pen Pal for the first time?
The article on how to Write to your Pen Pal for the First Time by WikiHow argues that you need to present yourself with a direct understanding to the pen pal. Tell them of how you ended up being a pen pal for them. Have a big variety on how much people you write to. Ask some questions, start formal, then get comfortable. The author states that...
“ Don't overdo it. The first letter you send doesn't need to be too long. You don't need to tell your life story. Instead, focus on introducing yourself and giving your new pen pal something to talk about in their next letter.” To also keep it simple, don’t get overboard and tell them everything. It is just like talking with someone for the first time. We will keep in mind the when writing a pen pal you need to write concibritable when you write for the first time and now we have a guide with we are talking to the disable. What is Down Syndrome?
The article argues that there is no cure that will take Down Syndrome away completely, but there are ways that people can help them. Eventually, Down Syndrome turns into Alzheimer's disease which is also not curable. There is also ways that you can help someone mentally, by health professionals, speech therapists, social workers, etc. The article states that..

Why write a letter?
The article states that people with disabilities want to be able to talk to someone because they have trouble making friends. Some have disabilities talking to others some have other types can't control themselves. They really want to have conversations about events that happen in their lives. It would be nice to talk to someone that can make you happy and it would be exciting to talk to someone that is the highlight of your week. It's almost like making a brand new friend for someone that really didn't have any friends. Most people would like letters because its a easy way to communicate and they can understand. Also, writing is a better way to express themselves because they can talk about anything. The article states that “Dedicated to establishing a global volunteer movement that creates opportunities for one-to-one friendships, integrated employment and leadership development for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.”
