Humanities
Project Overview
Throughout this semester, we've been inspiring, composing, and reflecting the stories of our past that effect our present.
The lengthy process of writing, recording, and editing our podcast has taught us that we the people have in some cases reflected upon our countries history. In result, it has lead us to the society we are today. Although, some believe a number of events still go unlearned. Many perspectives are welcomed and they may have changed the way we understand or look at history. Apart from reflecting on the past, we also are learning about the United States present as we deep dive into the lens of our countries government and what it means to be a citizen of America.

My Proudest Honors Reflection
What Are Honors Reflections?
Those who've been looking for a challenge has joined Humanities Honors. One of many commitments as an honor student was to read, annotate, and reflect upon an assigned reading. The reading that was selected and I reflected upon below was called Drawing The Color Line, by Howard Zinn. It was about the enslavement and oppression of Africans/African Americans faced in that time of American History.

Ms. Colleen's comments:"For how to cite pages from an article check out the Purdue OWL MLA formatting guidelines within the Reflection Guideline" |
Figure 2: The second page of my reflection
Ms. Colleen's comments: "Great work! You analyze a specific aspect of the article that often goes overlooked. Moving forward I challenge you to work on making your intro and conclusion more succinct. Explaining what you will be arguing in the intro, and then wrapping up the conclusions you have made from your analysis in the conclusion. Keep it up!" |
Podcast Outline & Final Podcast
Figure 3: Narrative Sound Cue Outline
|
(Fig. 3) In the process of editing our personal narratives we planned out our ideas on sound cues in our podcast. I had no idea what to add into my podcast at this specific time. I knew that I wanted a women crying in order to emphasize the sadness of my mom when I mentioned her way to cope with the sadness. Eventually, I managed to add many other sounds that I, at the time, didn't have in mind.

Humanities Field Trip Experiences
LA Museum of the Holocaust
As a class, we drove through lengthy traffic to the LA Holocaust Museum. Here we received an informational tour and heard a Holocaust survivor speak about her experience in a camp in Germany.
My favorite part of the whole trip was learning about the resilience of the survivor and how she managed to reflect on her experiences in a admirable way. I also enjoyed the murals that have been showcased in the museum. I could have stared and enjoyed at it's significance and symbolism all day!

Museum of Man-RACE Exhibition
In Balboa Park, we separated into two groups corresponding to our classes and received tour guides to enhance our learning experience. We learned about the meaning of race as a human in society and in evolutionary purposes.
Looking back in the past I enjoyed myself a whole lot. Time flew by as I felt as if I was in a trance of curiosity as my tour guides spoke incredibly interesting information. I would go again if I ever have the chance. I will also keep in mind that everything is better with a passionate tour guide to learn from. He really enhanced the experience!

San Diego History Center-Jewish Heritage in San Diego
As well as visiting the Museum of Man, we visited the San Diego History Center to deepen our understanding of the Jews effected by the war. We also did an info scavenge activity that was kinda fun to do.
Compared to the other museums, I didn't have too much of sparked curiosity. I enjoyed the fact they revolved it around the people in San Diego who searched for refugee from the war.

When I Was Puerto Rican
This is my final reflection of When I Was Puerto Rican. I reflected on the character Papi and how he was someone I enjoyed the most throughout the whole book.
|
The book When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago was about Esmeralda, a girl who goes through adolescence. She tries to learn how to adapt in New York after she was raised in a completely different place called Puerto Rico.

My WIWPR Discussion Growth
What are WIWPR (When I was Puerto Rican) discussions?
Apart from reading and reflecting each chapter of WIWPR, we had discussions in a group about the chapter we've read. The lines that form a web below represent the amount of times a person in the circle talked. They're also color coded in order to represent the question one discussed about. These discussions helped us understand the symbolism and interpretation of the story of another person, in other words, another mind.
In this web, my teacher wrote Kayla as my name. At the time, she didn't know I went by my middle name. Regardless, you can see I didn't talk much.
|
Here it seems I didn't improve as I would have liked. I only talked once on one question.
|
Here I improved a bunch! I remember I was first uncomfortable but over time I began to gain the feeling of comfortableness. In result, it influenced the times I spoke.
