Project Description
AS THE SYRIAN REFUGEE CRISIS WORSENED IN 2015, MANY HISTORIANS BEGAN COMPARING WHAT’S HAPPENING TODAY IN SYRIA TO WHAT HAPPENED IN EUROPE DURING WORLD WAR II. IN OUR CLASS, WE DID THE SAME. WE ASKED, WHY ARE SIMILAR PROBLEMS OCCURRING TODAY AS THE PROBLEMS THAT OCCURRED 80 YEARS AGO?
THIS LED TO FURTHER, MORE UNIVERSAL QUESTIONS: WHY DO PEOPLE PERSECUTE OTHERS? WHY DO PEOPLE FOLLOW CRUEL LEADERS? WHY DO PEOPLE SEE OTHERS IN NEED AND DO NOTHING? WHY ARE CIVILIANS TARGETED IN WAR?
WE CREATED BLACK AND WHITE SILENT FILMS TO EXPLORE THESE QUESTIONS AND TO DEVELOP EMPATHY FOR THE PEOPLE INVOLVED, BOTH FROM THE PAST AND THE PRESENT.THE FACES OF THE FILMS ARE OURS. THE SITUATIONS ARE NOT, BUT THEY COULD BE.

Our Film...
This scene shows that Jewish and non-Jewish Germans grew apart as a society. We wanted to show how they grew apart from opinions of other peers and how propaganda ruined relationships that Jews once had.
|
This scene shows Hitler and his crowd through the boy's eyes and perspective. A little German boy learns through his speeches and changes his perspective of Jews because of Hitler and his speeches which breaks his relationship with his friend which is at the time, a Jew.
|
This scene displays how Germans point out Jews and blame them for many reasons, such as blaming them for Jesus’s death and Germany's economy at the time. They are pointed out and treated horribly. In the German society of the 1940’s Jews were nothing but a burden.

History From Above Research Paper...
Silent Film: Group Member Reflection
Write down all the steps that is needed to complete the Humanities Silent Film Project
1) Learn about WWII history in the American and German perspective. Learn about the history and past about ISIS to the beginning to it's present state.
2) Get assigned roles and research based on the personal question you might have chosen... Psychologist, Historian, or Political Scientist. Begin to work on your research paper based on the format that has been expected, edit based on feedback at least twice from a peer and once from the teacher.
3) Along the way of step #2 we get assigned cohorts, chose facts to base your script on then get critique then act with your people in your cohort. Edit them, upload them, and finish them.
4) Along the way of step #3, fill in a formatted poster and answer based on the roles and facts you have answered to your reasoning.
5) Format your table for exhibition, print out the screenshots and reasoning and get ready to explain for exhibition.

If your Group members was a superhero, which one would they be?
They would be Batman because though he doesn't have much superpowers he is still able to complete his missions based on his inventions he has created. He doesn't need to be a god like superman to fight battles, all they need is their abilities and skills to succeed.
In what way do your need to improve as a group member?
Find a way to include others and not overwork myself since I am always worried things might not get done if I don't do them since I've had much experience of people letting me down. I tend to be a perfectionist when it comes to project because I like to do things right no matter how long it takes. I tend to lose sleep doing things by myself.
How well do you think you worked as a group?
Not that well, since others had more on their shoulders then others. We had some trust issues as well.
If you can change this project, what would you change?
I would have had other options then just filming.
DP Reflection
Exhibition
Describe last nights exhibition. Who talked to you? Who did you talk to? What did you talk about?
It was peaceful and had a vibe of a respected atmosphere. It was like library and the films shaped it. People didn't laugh, it was a pleasant place to be in. Arthur's dad came to me and asked when the WWII originally started. I talked to him about what made people follow crazy hitler and what if they didn't follow him. I told him that Hitlers flag was everywhere, eventually he brought back Germany to it's place, the military for Germany got stronger. People loved him and convinced others that he was the one to lead and so he did.
What were you most proud of in the exhibition?
I was proud of the films on the cloth because it formed a likable atmosphere. It kept me entertained when much people didn't visit. To think the effort our team has put in them it makes me proud.
If there was a re-do what would you have changed in exhibition?
The location of inform more people to come in. It was empty and not much people to talk to.
Learning
Compare your research paper to your History from Above survey. What new things did your learn?
I learned more about the phycology side of human when peer pressure of a society is upon them. It was interesting how this connected to following Hitler in the 1940's. I learned what going through their minds and I don't blame them for falling into his trap.
What from your film was well done?
I think that the time-lapse we have created using our resources was well done. It was powerful because of it's message. Using this type of film is really good for serious of powerful messages that can't be explained through words, only by actions like the Holocaust or the ISIS Crisis.
What would you have done differently compared to two other silent films?
I would have used more stock footage and camera angling to make it make a bit more sense. Since we had limited time to film we got it done fast but I would have liked to add more into it.
